Student’s Leaders Of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife, led by Mr. Omotayo Akande Damilare, a part 5 student of Chemical Engineering of the institution has been accused of syphoning the union funds.
The revelation which came from the President of Association of Campus Journalist, Mr. Olanrewaju Oyedeji was a supporting clause to the accusations from Vice Dean of Students Affairs of the institution, Dr. Bayo Afolabi while delivering his speech at a event over the weekend, organized by association of campus Journalist tagged “Great Ife Students Summit” which had Edmund Obilo as the guest speaker of the day.
Dr. Afolabi was quoted to have said “a particular Union officer (who he did not initially want to disclose) had collected 2.5m and spent it within 3 days”, the vice dean was thereafter challenged by a student activist Koye Ladele from faculty of law to name the union leader in question as his refusal will mean he’s not telling the truth.
He took up the challenge and said the money was Union dues and it was paid to Omotayo Akande led Union. He dared them to come out with facts that they did not receive such monies.
A further investigation by Mr. Olanrewaju Oyedeji and our reporter pointed to the fact that a huge amount of money is yet unaccounted for despite the fact that the financial secretary that served under the leadership of Omotayo Akande led administration, Mr. Olajide Adeyanju Ayodeji (elect elect 500l) came out with a press statement to deny such claims, labelled the vice dean as a blatant liar in the process.
A close source within the union structure disclosed how over 3.5 million was embezzled within a short period of time, from Dr. Akinosun Indigent Scholarship Program to various unfulfilled manifestos.
Our reporter was presented with documents to show how the union leaders manipulated names of beneficiary of Dr. Akinosun Indigent Scholarship Program which had some of Mr. Omotayo Akande loyalist on the list with a conflicting figures.
In an interview with THESNIPERNEWS, a woman selling goods at the student union building disclosed how they were mandated to pay over 700, 000 Naira into a Diamond bank account to renovate some part of the building.
“We paid over 700, 000 to the union leaders for renovation, and some of us even paid twice, we were asked to pay into a Diamond bank account”. She further jokingly said, “I would love to be the next union president of the school because big money is involved”, she conclusively smiled.
However, an attempt to speak with Mr. Omotayo Akande at the time of writing this report proved abortive as his lines indicate it’s out of coverage area.
