Liverpool agree £75m fee with Southampton for Virgil van Dijk and he will join the club on January 1, according to Sky sources.
He has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal for £75m making him the most expensive defender in football history which will run until the summer of 2023 and is worth about £180,000 a week. Van Dijk will wear the No 4 jersey.
Van Dijk is likely to be at Anfield on Saturday when Jürgen Klopp’s side face Leicester City.
Klopp on Van Dijk: “I can imagine the people thinking ‘wow what a number that is’, but of course, for me, its not interesting. We don’t make the prices, the market does. The first thing all Liverpool supporters should forget quite soon is the price.”
Klopp on Van Dijk: “We only talk about the player and what he can bring in; the quality, the mentality, the character. That is why we are really happy about it.”
