CONVENTION PLANNING COMMITTEE WILL SCREEN OUT NON STUDENTS – SALAM OYEJIDE, DEFENDS NANS PRESIDENT

By Oye Ola Oladimeji It is no longer news that the convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has been slated to hold between 13-15 May in Taraba State. One of the aspiring candidates in to the Senate Presidency of the Association has however aver that he is confident that the Convention Planning Committee (CPC) chaired by Obinna Obianozie will disqualify non students aspiring to occupy the exalted seat of the Association.

Comrade Salam stated this while responding to questions in an interview on OAU Wikileaks moderated by Moshood Odunayo Olajide, the platform convener.

Salam who is a graduate of the federal school of statistics before proceeding to study Economics in OAU where he is currently a final year student also said he has contributed a lot to the growth of the union especially the 2014 fee increment struggle, and the reinstatement of 3 victimized union leaders.

Responding to a question from Okeowo Olasunkanmi Peter, the Editor -In Chief of the Socioscope News agency and the Librarian of the Association of the Association of Campus Journalist (ACJ, OAU), on how he intend to tackle incessant victimization of student activists in Nigeria higher institutions, Salam said creating conducive environment for students and applying basic approach to issues is crucial in tackling this to make school managements sheath their sword.

Also, responding to a question from Honorable Khent, the General Secretary of the National Association of Osun State Students (NAOSS), on how he intends to solve the problems he noticed in the current administration of the Tijani Usman Shehu led NANS and how he intends solving it.

Comrade Salam however said he is not aware of any problem in the current administration of NANS. The Tijani Usman led NANS has faced series of opprobrium criticism from students and civil society organizations especially the recent open support of the NANS President for Vice Chancellors sacked by the federal government.

While the Association was also staunchly reproached for giving award to politicians in exchange for financial reward. It will be recalled that Comrade Tijani Usman Shehu constituted a 19 man Convention Planning Committee on Monday in Abuja to coordinate the activities of the Taraba convention and screen aspiring candidates. Others constituted include a four man advisory council to the CPC led by Comrade Yinka Gbadebo, a former of NANS President.

Meanwhile, the interview continues on the OAU Wikileaks platform today with a NANS Senate Presidential aspirant from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) set to be interviewed by 10 pm.
